Getting to Liverpool and Getting Around

You'll be pleased to know that this city is exceptionally well-connected to the rest of the world. Whether you travel by plane, train, or bus, Liverpool is fully equipped to welcome visitors from across the UK and beyond.

Plane: Liverpool John Lennon Airport welcomes millions of travellers each year, serving over 70 destinations. Upon arrival, you will have a wide range of transport options to take you to your next stop. The fastest way into the city is the 500 bus. This takes 30 minutes and costs just £2 per journey! Alternatively, Manchester Airport—one of the UK’s largest—serves an impressive 199 destinations. While it may not be as convenient as landing in Liverpool, it is only an hour’s drive down the M62 and provides an excellent alternative. The fastest way into Liverpool from Manchester Airport would be the direct train service to Liverpool Lime Street! If you arrive elsewhere in the UK, you should have no difficulty finding a connecting flight to Liverpool or Manchester.

Train: Liverpool has several railway stations, with Liverpool Lime Street being the largest and most central. It drops passengers right in the heart of the city, opposite the iconic St George’s Hall. Lime Street offers direct connections to Manchester, Newcastle, London, Crewe, and many other locations. If you are arriving by plane, you can take a shuttle bus to Liverpool South Parkway, which provides an easy connection into the city. For local travel around Merseyside, Merseyrail is the go-to service. Avanti West Coast is one of the main national rail providers, offering journeys up and down the West-Coast of the UK!

Boat: If you're lucky enough to be travelling by cruise, Liverpool’s cruise terminal could be one of your stops! The city has a rich maritime heritage, and many ships dock here throughout the year. The Cruise Terminal is just a short 10 minute walk from the City Centre and a 5 minute walk from our closest City Tour stop! Liverpool also has regular ferry services to Dublin with Stena Line and Douglas in The Isle of Man with The Isle of Man Steam Packet Company. Both of the ferry terminals have a bus route which can take you directly to Liverpool’s City Centre!

Bus: Several bus and coach services operate across the UK, providing direct travel to Liverpool. National Express and Flix Bus offers routes from cities such as London, Leeds, and Birmingham. Car: If you’re driving to Liverpool, you’ll find the journey fairly straightforward. The UK has an extensive motorway network linking cities across the country, and Liverpool is well connected via the M57, M62, M58, and M6. The A580—known locally as the East Lancs Road—is a key route linking Liverpool to Manchester and other northern cities. Driving within the city itself is generally hassle-free, with clear road signs directing you to major attractions and landmarks. However, be aware that the city centre can be busy during peak hours, and roadworks may cause delays. Parking regulations are in place, so be sure to check local restrictions before leaving your vehicle.
